Alki Race & BBQ Event Report

Post date: Oct 18, 2016 6:24:20 PM

(Thanks to Jack Caldwell for the following race report from our race/BBQ event a few weeks back.)

Hi All,

A big thank you to the 7 skippers who brought their crew and boats to our event.

I hope all the participants enjoyed the picnic potluck as much as I did. The entree was good, made by "The Swinery Restaruarant," the choice was do you want Carolina (which was new to most of us) or BBQ Style sauce for your Pulled Pork Sandwiches? The entrée was provided by fleet 1. The picnic committee had a chance to try out a new way to quickly set up a tarp between two Boats in the parking lot in case of rain. It did start to rain a little and then stopped.

The winds were greater than predicted as our race committee head described as (1 knot gusting to 1 knot) and the sunny weather was a plus as well. It ended up I would guess mostly in the 3-7 knot range with a few dead spots.

This was our second annual picnic at Alki preceded by a race. The venue lends itself well to having a onshore Race Committee Station relieving the racers from having to handle that part of the racing on the water. The onshore Race Committee Station helped also to raise our profile by giving us a place to display our new SJ21 Fleet #1 banners.

I received a dues cash payment from a new member of our club at the picnic, a heads up to our treasurer to ask me about handing over the loot. It was proposed at the picnic that we have a cruise the day after to Blake Island. Perhaps next year?
