Wooglin #986

Skipper – Mr. Chris Popich  Crew – Mrs. Chris (Christine) Popich & Mrs. Cindi Maki

San Juan History

Chris & Chris Popich have been sailing San Juan 21s long enough to have purchased the same boat twice.  They sold #986 in the mid 1970’s (like much in the 1970’s details remain fuzzy) but returned to the SJ21 scene in the Late 1990s with hull #40.  Then in a bizarre twist Chris repurchased #986 last year from the same person he had sold it to in 197X.  Apparently the boat had been part of a hermetically sealed time capsule experiment for 30 years, and is one of the prettiest original boats you will run across.

National Results:

Wooglin has participated in many Western Nationals races over the years.  His best result was 2nd in the Spinnaker Class in 2005 at Brownsville WA.  In Coos Bay, 2008 Wooglin sailed in the Working Sails class and placed 7th in the 25 boat fleet.

Often Heard Aboard:

“Coming UP!!!”  (Rumor has it that Wooglin only takes 38.6 degrees to complete a tack.)

Cocktail of choice:

Coronas with Lime (just don’t spill them!)

Other Notes:

Chris Popich has been a tireless supporter and advocate of the SJ21 class.  His amazing contributions as Fleet #1 Captain and Western Vice Commodore are largely responsible for the renaissance and growth the Seattle SJ21 fleet has been experiencing for several years.  Plus he is one of the most genuine nice guys you will ever meet… but forget all that come race time…  if you have the opportunity… make sure to push him over the line early.  (Seriously, it may be your only chance... see if you can pick out the fleet in the picture above.)
