Calling All Sailors ... It's Fall Season Time!

posted Sep 11, 2020, 1:43 PM by Kris Barker

Our Fall racing series is happening! A few of us met (via Zoom) on Thursday 9/10 to approve a modified Fleet 1-events-only schedule for this fall as a result of the canceled Chelan Regatta and our decision to cancel this year's Gene Adams Memorial Regatta.

That means FIVE fleet races this fall starting with the kickoff at Coulon tomorrow, 9/12, first start at noon. Check out the full season calendar - we've got 5 races, one every two weeks into early November. There was some confusion regarding a discussion on modifying the first start time - a discussion that now seems ages ago - so we'll go back to our historically normal 12:00pm noon start during daylight savings time and 11:30am once standard time hits.

Hopefully the "load" on Coulon is less than what we experience back in May, but get there early if you can to make sure you've got a place to park. And keep your fingers crossed for clear enough skies to actually be able to see the marks!

Hope to see a bunch of boats tomorrow!

Spring #4

posted May 10, 2020, 2:53 PM by Kris Barker

Spring #4 did actually happen on Saturday May 8th with 3 boats in the water and 2 others unable to find parking (ack!). Stephen reports that the winds were good until about 2pm then got pretty light. This completes our Spring Series ... and, as you all know, it's been a highly unusual one.

The next scheduled sailing event is the North Americans in Klamath Falls the last weekend in June. At this point that event is on, however, a final determination will be made at the National Association meeting on Thursday, June 4th so stay tuned here and on the National Association site.

Meanwhile, we haven't had a fleet meeting in a couple of months so we'll be trying the Zoom thing this Thursday, 5/14 at 6:30pm. Keep a lookout for an invite in your email and I hope to see you there.

Our 3rd fleet race this spring, scheduled for Saturday April 4th, has been cancelled. Note also that the first Road Warrior event this year, the Milltown Spring Regatta in Everett, has been postponed to (tentatively) May 2nd. Check back here and on the fleet calendar for up to date scheduling information.

Stay safe and healthy!

2020 Spring #1 - Recap

posted Mar 8, 2020, 2:00 PM by Kris Barker   [ updated Mar 8, 2020, 2:10 PM ]

Well, it was an interesting day to say the least! (If you want all the gory details, make sure you come to the fleet meeting this Thursday March 12.) Our efforts to have the 1st start at 11:30AM were, seemingly, thwarted at every turn, but we did manage to get 4 races in, albeit starting about an hour late.

The weather was mixed - mostly decent with sun/light rain cycles throughout the afternoon and a bit chilly. The wind was good - a bit blustery the first race or two, then calmed down a bit. We had 4 boats show up although our start delay and the increased winds knocked us down to 3 racing. And with good wind, we even varied the course from race to race. All in all, really fun day to get rid of some of the cobwebs (believe me, Stephen and I had plenty) and get back into racing.

Hope to see more boats out there in 2 weeks - please remember to indicate your participation on the spreadsheet I sent out earlier. And for any non-boat owners who'd like to participate, we typically have a couple of boats being single-handed by skippers who LOVE having crew!

2020 Spring #1 - Saturday March 7th @Coulon, 1st start 11:30AM

It's time to sail! And if you are like me, getting out on the water and away from all the current "crazy" seems like just the ticket. Weather looks decent - light winds and mostly cloudy ... hopefully the rain will hold off until we're all wrapped up for the day.

I'm working on a signup mechanism so we can see who is coming - I have phone numbers but don't really want to post those on the public site, so maybe we can do the email coordination thing this week.

Many of you got an email from me linking to a spreadsheet to indicate whether or not you'll be sailing - please update it so we'll all know. (And if you didn't get the email, let me know.)

Hope to see you out on the water this weekend.

Spring Sailing Is Just Around the Corner!

Lots to cover so hang in there!

At the fleet meeting last night (Thursday, Feb 13th) we finalized the 2020 calendar which includes:
  • 4 spring and 3 fall fleet events, all at Coulon Park in Renton
  • 4 road warrior events including the 3rd annual Gene Regatta in September
  • The North American Championship, this year in Klamath Falls, OR, in June
  • Monthly fleet meetings & our Christmas Party in December
We also approved a slight change to the day-of schedule for fleet races - first race will begin at 11:30AM which should allow us to get a few more races in over the season as well as open up opportunities for longer or more varied courses. (No race starts after 3pm remains the same.) Note that this applies to ALL fleet races - we've eliminated the daylight savings time vs. standard time difference.

You can view the updates on your Google Calendar (click here if you need to add it) or click on Events Calendar to see upcoming events. And don't forget to pay your 2020 dues - you can join Fleet 1using the Join Form ... and join the National Association here.

We had great turnout at the fleet meeting - let's see that carry into a great racing season! Numbers were down a bit last year, especially in the fall. But just think back a few years at how much fun this all is with 10+ boats on the water!

Finally, for now, we're going to be setting up a text/phone tree to better facilitate day-before-race-day communications/coordination. I got a bunch of numbers at the meeting, but if you weren't there, please send me your name and phone number so I can add it to the list. (Presumably we have email addresses - but if you don't get fleet emails and would like to, include that as well.) Thanks!

Wrapping up 2019

We'll wrap up 2019 this week with our monthly fleet meeting Thursday 11/14 and final race of the season this Saturday at Coulon. Turnout has been really light this fall - let's see if we can get a few more boats out on the water this week! And last but not least, our annual Christmas party is coming up soon - Sunday Dec 8th from 2pm-6pm at Jack & Jenny's place. Hope to see many of you at all there.
