posted Sep 1, 2018, 10:55 AM by Kris Barker   [ updated Sep 1, 2018, 10:58 AM ]

It's time to sail ... and there are lots of opportunities this month so get ready to get out there!

Sept 8/9 - Chelan Regatta, Lake Chelan
Sept 15 - Fall #2 (well, kinda Fall #1 :-), Coulon Park, Renton
Sept 20 - Monthly fleet meeting at the Chelan Cafe
Sept 29/30 - Inaugural Gene Adams Memorial Regatta, Des Moinse Marina

Hope to see many of you at many (all!) of these events. It's been awhile since we've been out as a fleet so call all your SJ21 buddies and let's get lots of boats on the water. Check the Events Calendar for all the details. And make sure you get your entry for the Gene Adams Regatta in SOON so we know how many boats/people to expect.

Mark Your Calendars! The Inaugural San Juan 21 Gene Adams Memorial Regatta

Seattle San Juan 21 Fleet One would like to announce the first of what we hope will become an annual must-attend event for all San Juan 21 sailors,  our inaugural San Juan 21 Gene Adams Memorial Regatta, Sept 29-30, 2018 at the marina in Des Moines, WA.

Back in April 2015 the San Juan 21 community lost a treasured friend and fellow sailor. At that time Fleet One made a commitment to honor Gene by coming up with something special. We know of no better way than to host a regatta in his name.  We want to make it an event that Gene would be proud of so plan on it being a special weekend filled with socializing, eating, drinking… plenty of stories, plus some fun racing thrown in.  Gene was always welcoming to new sailors so if you’re new to the sport he’d want you to come join in the fun, meet some new friends and see what our little boats are all about.

See the attached NOR for all the details and don't hesitate to email any of the fleet officers (see Fleet 1 Information) with any questions. Let’s make this regatta one to remember!

Next time you hear "snow", don't you believe it!

For those spooked by rumors of the white stuff, you missed an exceptional day of sailing at Coulon: mostly sunny, steady 10+/- kt winds, and nary a drop or a flake. Unfortunately, turnout was also exceptional ... exceptionally light, that is.

Working sails was represented by Doug; Stephen (and yours truly) along with a partial day appearance by Christian (and family) made up the spinnaker fleet. Wind was perfect to get lots of racing in. We started right at noon and finished up just after 3 completing 6 races in all. It sure was fun zipping along at 4 - 5.5 knots all day.

Next up we are back at Coulon on April 7th. Don't miss out!

Racing Update - aka, time to start racing, part deux

posted Mar 21, 2018, 9:25 AM by Kris Barker

Well, we didn't quite make it for the team racing - we didn't have quite the number of commitments needed to pull it off. BUT our "regular" spring season starts this Saturday, March 24th with Spring #1 at Coulon. See the Events Calendar for all the particulars. Right now weather is looking partly sunny with light winds - if that holds, should be a great first race of the season.

Also schedule related, we've got a line on a possible location/date for the Gene Adams regatta we've been discussing the last year or so, The timing of this MAY impact the fall schedule a bit - we'll know more in a few weeks and will discuss in detail at the next fleet meeting on April 19th. Stay tuned!

Don't look now, but it's time to start racing!

The 2018 schedule has been posted to the Fleet calendar. We start the year with a team race at Coulon on March 10th. Both the Spring and Fall feature 4 Fleet races and 2 Road Warrior events. So, it's time to start talking it up and let's see if we can get some double digit turnouts this year. More info posted as things are further finalized, but do plan on the team race in a couple of weeks - it's always a great way to start the season.

Christmas Party Time!

Our annual Christmas Party is just around the corner:

Sunday 12/3, 2pm-6pm
Home of Jack and Jenny Caldwell
3219 40th Ave SW (West Seattle)

If you are coming (and we hope you are):
  • Please email Chris to let us know what you are bringing: salad, hot side dish, or dessert (the fleet will provide the ham). People often bring wine as well.
  • Remember your white elephant gift! Bring a wrapped, fun gift - $20 max - for each person who wants to participate in the exchange.
  • And if you've not had a chance to pay your fleet dues for 2017 yet, here's your last opportunity! And for those looking ahead, I'm sure Jim will be happy to take dues for 2018 as well :-).
We'll also have season awards and a (very, very) brief meeting to select new fleet officers for next year.

See you there!

Fall #3 - October 21, Coulon

posted Oct 24, 2017, 11:54 AM by Kris Barker

Despite a rather ominous forecast going into Saturday morning, the weather gods held off the really wild stuff until later in the day and 3 boats along with their brave skippers and crew turned out for a great day of racing. Yes, it rained pretty much all day, but not all that heavily, at least until the very end and the winds were steady and not overwhelming.

Spinnakers were out the first couple of races, but the wind shifted slightly resulting in nice beam reach downwind legs the rest of the day. Even with a fairly long course, we got 5! races in ... fun stuff!

Fall #1 - Coulon, September 23

posted Sep 26, 2017, 9:44 PM by Kris Barker

It was a great day to be out sailing on Saturday with sun and temperatures in the upper 60's. Winds were light and shifted during the day from westerly to northerly which made for some interesting course alterations. We had 5 boats participating: 3 all sails (Chris, Scott, & Stephen) and 2 working sails (JimM and Doug). Racing started just after noon and we finished up just about 3pm after 3 races. Jim was victorious in working sails taking 3 firsts; in all sails Stephen edged out Chris with 2 firsts and a second.

A fantastic day - let's see if we can get a few more boats out for Fall #2 at Coulon on October 7th. Hope to see you there!
