Summer's Here!

posted Jun 15, 2021, 2:38 PM by Kris Barker   [ updated Jun 15, 2021, 3:04 PM ]

There will be much more on the North Americans including full results and regatta summaries up on the national site soon so make sure to check it out. Now that it's summer we won't have a fleet meeting this month or likely next - we may do something in August depending on how planning for The Gene (9/25-26) is going ... and we'll have a normal September meeting on Thursday 9/9 - watch for email early that week.

Our next official event is the Chelan Regatta, the weekend after Labor Day, Sept 11-12. While the Chelan Sailing Association website says it's still undecided ... I have it on good authority that it will happen this year and I'll add a post here once registration is open. That's certainly one of my favorite events of the year and a really great way to start the fall season.

I'm not sure if there are any plans for either a fleet summer picnic (haven't had one of those in quite a while) or any get-together non-race sailing, but I'm sure most of you have most everyone's emails so feel free to reach out.

North Americans - Pre-official Report

posted Jun 15, 2021, 2:33 PM by Kris Barker   [ updated Jun 15, 2021, 2:59 PM ]

The North Americans were last weekend in Klamath Falls and we can be proud of Fleet 1's showing: Stephen Jensen took 3rd in All Sails and - wait for it - Paul Von Stubbe won the Working Sails championship! Turnout was quite light but the competition was really good with many tight races - including Paul's win secured on the very last race and via the 3rd (or was it 4th) tie breaker.

Klamath Lake is a rather odd place to sail given the minimal depth and (thankfully not yet too annoying) bugs, but the Klamath Yacht Club was a great place to be and all the Fleet 51 folks made us all feel right at home. Thanks to Greg Collins (regatta organizer) and the many Yacht Club members who put on a terrific event - great racing, great food & drink, and fantastic hospitality.

Up Next - The 2021 North American Championships!

Light (very) winds and beautiful sunny weather were the characteristics of the day for Spring #5, our last fleet race this spring. Just 3 boats and at times, the winds were quite frustrating, but we hung in there and got 3 races in the books. 2021 Spring Series results (as well as the start of the Road Warrior Series) are posted here: Race Scoring and Reports

Our next fleet meeting is opening night at the North Americans so I suspect we'll reschedule to the following Thursday. As Chris noted, sign ups are quite light so far - so it's a great chance to be competitive and national events are always a blast. Currently 3 boats headed down from Fleet 1 ... there's still time to sign up and join the party!

Spring #5 - Last Fleet Race Until Fall

posted May 20, 2021, 9:06 PM by Kris Barker   [ updated May 20, 2021, 9:06 PM ]

And no excuses! Predictwind says 7-10kts, weather.com says 74 degrees and no rain - just about perfect in my book. What are you waiting for? It'd be great to get more than 4 boats out there racing ... and those of us headed south for the North Americans in a few weeks could really use the competition!

Hope to see you at Coulon this Saturday, 5/22 - first start at noon.

Spring #4 is in the books

posted May 10, 2021, 9:49 AM by Kris Barker

Just 4 boats but a really great day of sailing. Winds were light to moderate and unusually squirrelly - just (barely) consistent enough at the start to be upwind heading south for all 5 races, but in several, the "downwind" leg ended up either a reach or slightly upwind! (Kinda reminded you of what Lake Union is like.) Weather-wise it was terrific ... warm and dry the entire afternoon.

Just one more race this spring - Saturday May 22nd at Coulon - let's see if we can get a few more boats out there for the final fleet event. It'll be a good tune-up for Nationals next month in Klamath Falls - and even those who aren't heading down need to come out and give those who are a bit of competition.

And don't forget our monthly fleet meeting - this THURSDAY, May 13th at 7pm - see Chris' email with the Zoom details.

Norm Blanchard Recap ...You missed a really good one!

posted Apr 30, 2021, 3:22 PM by Kris Barker

It was great to get back out on the water (Stephen's knees held up :-) and the Norm Blanchard regatta back in full force last weekend. Just two "classic plastic" boats - Juans2B (Paul & Vanessa) vs. Charmed Juan (Stephen & Kris) - and the racing was incredibly close both days.

There were 3 starts - we were initially put in the 2nd group (kinda mid-sized boats) doing a single lap of the round-the-lake course, but after finishing WAY more quickly than the race committee expected, we were moved up to the 1st start of larger boats and 2 laps for each race. Even with that, our two little San Juans won nearly every race.

The final tally was Paul 3, Stephen 3 - including the last race by less than half a boat length! The wind was good both days (especially Saturday) and despite a little ran on the first day, the conditions were great. If you are a little jealous, you sure should be!

Just two more fleet races left this spring - great tune-ups for the Nationals in Klamath Falls in June. Hope to see a bunch of boats at Coulon on May 8th and 22nd.

Road Warrior #1 - Norm Blanchard W.O.O.D. Regatta

posted Apr 21, 2021, 1:17 PM by Kris Barker

Greetings - the Norm Blanchard is this weekend, April 24/25, on Lake Union. As of this writing, winds look light to moderate with a change of some light precip on Saturday, but hey, it's still early. I suspect we'll need at least 5 boats to get our own start so head on into town and let's do some racing!

Stephen and I are launching on Friday afternoon and taking the boat down to CWB; they provide us w/ dock space for the weekend. It'd be great to have a few of us there and maybe catch a little dinner close by. Racing both days is noon-5pm with awards following on Sunday. Registration and racing instructions are available up on Norm Blanchard W.O.O.D. Regatta - so get to the site and sign up now!

See you on the water ... this Saturday!

It's Racing Time - Spring #1

posted Mar 11, 2021, 8:17 PM by Kris Barker   [ updated Mar 11, 2021, 8:41 PM ]

The first race of the season is THIS SATURDAY, 3/13 at Coulon - first start at noon. Stephen is laid up recovering from knee replacement, but Paul has graciously stepped in as race chair for this one. Sunny and 62 degrees sounds pretty darn good for mid-March so this is a great chance to dust off the cobwebs and get out on the water!

Also a reminder to get signed up for the Norm Blanchard W.O.O.D. Regatta 2-day coming up April. We probably need 5+ boats to get our own start and as many can tell you, sailing on Lake Union is  crazy fun!

And finally - time to pay fleet (and national) dues. You've now got two options - pay by check, or if you have a PayPal account, you can use that as well. See the Join Form page for details and THANK YOU for your support of the fleet.

Let's get out for some spring sailing!

Spring Season Update

posted Feb 15, 2021, 5:05 PM by Kris Barker   [ updated Feb 15, 2021, 5:07 PM ]

Just a quick report from last week's meeting:

We've gotten confirmation that the Norm Blanchard WOOD Regatta, scheduled for April 24-25, is happening - and we are invited as their "Classic Plastic" division entrants! It's always such a great event - hope many of you can be a part (it is one of our Road Warrior fleet events). Information/registration can be found at https://www.cwb.org/wood-regatta.

We may be missing a few of our regular participants in the first couple of races this spring due to a variety of other commitments so your participation is even more important! We have another fleet meeting on Thursday March 11th (email to follow) just 2 days before the first spring race on the 13th.

And don't forget to check out the information on this summer's North American regatta down in Klamath Falls in early June - see http://sj21class.org/events.html for all the details.

Now that the snow is rapidly melting, it'll soon be time to get out and sail!
